Taka Pesa
Taka Pesa (“Waste Cash”) is our newest initiative: 20-foot buy-back containers placed in schools and communities, each run by a local woman entrepreneur. Residents bring sorted waste — paper, cardboard, cans, hard plastic, soft plastic, mixed plastic, glass — and get paid by the kilo, at market rates plus a plastic credit on mixed plastic.
Each container has a scale and a manual baler. We expect every site to receive about 10 tons of sorted waste a month, generate income for hundreds of nearby residents, and earn the operator over TZS 450,000 in monthly profit.
Recyclable material goes to our facility for baling and shredding. Non-recyclable plastic is shredded and sent to a local cement plant for co-processing.
